LAWN CARE PUEBLO COLORADO

Using sugar to get a green lawn

Make no mistake. We are not going to cook something with sugar to get a beautiful green lawn. So why sugar got involved in this blog. Keep reading.

Doing lawn care and keeping it green is not easy and in fact it costs money.  You might be spending around $300-$500 a year to keep your grass looking green – and that’s for fertilizer and weed killers only. And that amount itself could at least be used to buy something else.

One time I was looking on my lawn and I remembered my mother in law putting sugar on a pot of soil before she planting something that happened a few years ago. I did not ask why on that time because it might sound disrespectful. Then I asked my dad the possible reason why. Then my dad said that sugar can act as a natural fertilizer on soil. So, I did some research and found out that it was true. Now, we are not saying to throw your chemical fertilizers and weed killers away. Sugar fertilizes your lawn using a different approach. So, you’ll still need those fertilizers and weed killers.

Below are the reasons how can sugar can fertilize your lawn and its benefits that it can give when applied to your lawn.
  • Sugar feed the beneficial microbes, insects and worms.
  • There are no chemicals on sugar, hence it will not give any allergic reaction for people and pets (unless you are allergic to sugar itself).
  • Sugar helps to provide the nutrients to fortify your grass while putting off weeds.
  • It’s easy to apply.
  • Obviously cheap.
  • It’s a natural and organic product. So, you don’t need to worry about possibly polluting the environment and any potential health risks.
Using your chemical fertilizers is still okay. But they also kill off the microbes and insects that your lawn needs. Sugar is a simplest carbohydrate on which any living thing can consume. It can enrich your soil by:
  • Boosting the nutrients needed by the soil and its absorption.
  • Enhances nitrogen availability.
  • It makes your lawn look green by increasing photosynthesis (the way plants process food for themselves).
  • Revitalizing root formation.
  • Enhances soil structure.
  • Increasing humus levels.
  • Enhances your lawn’s resistance to extreme heat, drought and cold.
  • Also controls fungal diseases that your lawn could get like brown spots.
Grass like St. Augustine among others loves nutrient rich soil. While weeds love poor soil because they use it as leverage to take over and crowd out unhealthy sod that scarcely getting the nutrients from sporadic and artificial feedings from chemical fertilizer. On the other hand, soil that is rich in nutrients nourishes your green lawn every day without depletion.

How to apply sugar on your lawn
It could be helpful if you have a hand-spreader or a broadcast spreader to be used to apply the sugar. But to be honest, it is not required. In fact, you can use your hand for it. There is no required or recommended amount of sugar that a soil will need. Plus, it is chemical free. So, you do not need to worry about the possibility of harming your lawn because of too much sugar.

Here are some tips for applying sugar by hand.
  • You can use any container with a wide opening then walk up and down your lawn, shaking out the sugar.
  • Use a 5-pound bag for each 1,000 square feet of lawn. You cannot use too much, and it won’t damage your grass if you accidentally applied more sugar in a certain area. But then again, do not apply excessive amounts because if you do, you are simply wasting it anything of too much is bad, including your lawn.
  • We suggest applying sugar several times during the first year of use. Since that your lawn could be damaged from using chemicals for years, it will take time for those chemicals to leach out from the ground and even more time to replenish those microbes that got removed by using chemicals on your lawn.
  • Once your lawn got used on sugar and you have your beautiful green grass, then you only have to apply sugar twice a year (during spring and fall).
  • After applying sugar on your lawn, you will have to thoroughly water your lawn for the sugar to be fully absorbed by the soil.
